Inverness to Plockton
Leave Inverness, but before embarking on the NC500 its worth taking a short detour to visit the picturesque Loch Ness and the opportunity to perhaps catch a glimpse of Nessie. There are a couple of options, either head for the village of Dores at the east end of Loch Ness, which offers views along the length of the loch, or alternatively the Visitor centre at Urquhart Caste, just south of Drumnadrochit. From Drumnadrochit we can cut across country to join up with the NC500 route by taking the A833 climbing up the Cul na Kirk at 8% gradient to re-join the A832.
Our route continues into Beauly where a visit to the ruined priory is an option or the Old Schoolhouse for a coffee break. Continuing onwards our route sees us taking the west road out of Muir of Ord with an option to visit the Glen Ord Distillery, where guided tours of the whisky making process are available.
Passing through Marybank we join the A835 where we head west taking the route towards Garve. At Contin, take a short detour along the A834 to Strathpeffer which in Victorian times was a Spa Town, perhaps try the sulphur water. Points of interest are the Museum of Childhood, Spa Pavilion, Eagle Stone.
Retrace your route back to the A835 and the next point of interest is Rogie Falls, ample parking and a short walk to the falls
Continue through Garve, you will see Ben Wyvis to your right, however it’s time to head further west Along the A832 towards Achnasheen, where the road runs parallel to the River Bran.
At Achnasheen, you may notice the 10000-year-old Ice Terraces
Head along the A890 and at the New Kelso junction follow the road through Strathcarron, perhaps a visit to Carron Pottery or Attadale Gardens, continue until the road joins the A87 and then its 2 miles to Eileen Donan Castle, one of the most photographed scenes in Scotland.
Retrace your route on the A87 until Balmacara, turn off and take the road to Duirinish and onto the scenic village of Plockton famous for its views and climate which allows the growing of palm trees. Nice place for a break or overnight stop
